Morgans are known for their willing and kind dispositions. These traits, when combined with a good measure of athleticism, make for wonderful dressage horses, according to David MacMillan of Provo, UT, who has been training Morgans in dressage for the past eight years and who has ridden three Morgans to FEI levels.
"Morgans are generally smaller than your average warmblood and have an easier time finding and maintaining their balance" says MacMillan "They tend to be lighter in the contact when working through their backs, which makes for a wonderful dressage experience."
"Dressage is new to the Morgan industry, and breeding programs established with just dressage and/or sporthorses in mind are very young," says Morgan sport-horse breeder Wendy Gray Bizzaro, owner of Gray-Barron Ranch in Park City, UT, whose horses MacMillan trains and rides. That said, Bizzaro has noticed a trend in Morgan pedigrees when it comes to dressage.
